Thursday 17 January 1991: Well it's happened, the bastards have gone in and I'm writing a heavy piece about it because I have strong feelings about the whole affair in which, while war was inevitable, more effort should have been made to try to avert war and less done to make a situation that took us down the path to war and the possible tragic effects that may occur because of it. George Bush is as much to blame as Saddam Hussein, primarily for sending his troops in at the offset and, therefore, encouraging the other nations now involved militarily to also send in military support in the form of ground, air or sea support. It is my opinion that more time should have occurred between the initial invasion by Iraq and the first wave of 'allied' troops into the area, during which time real efforts could have occurred that lessened the chances of war. Iraq said it only took Kuwait in order that it raise oil prices and would leave after a matter of weeks at the latest. It was during this time that the first troops landed in Saudi Arabia and started the real countdown to war against Iraq. Hussein was getting backed into a corner, withdraw and lose face, or prepare for attack. It was inevitable that the latter was the option that was going to be taken, and that became clear as the United Nations deadline for the Iraqi withdrawal from Kuwait approached and both the US and Iraqi governments gave their respective leaders the right to start the attack, during which time peace initiatives were being put forward by many countries and being turned down by not only the Iraqi's but also by the US which is ridiculous and shows no real care for the aversion of war by either side and that really makes me sick. This war should never have happened and now that it has I only hope that it is over in a matter of days or weeks, and that New Zealand does not get involved any more than it has already, because I don't want to die for any American president.
